A Good Father's Counsel by Francisco Baltazar

In my opinion, it is wrong
To rear a child in sloth and ease,
For being used to joy o'er long;
When grown, no happiness he sees.

Because this world's a vale of tears
Men's hearts need strengthening in the right;
If used for joy, strength disappears;
Then, grief's keen sorrow what shall fight?

Like a plant that's in the water grown,
Whose leaves, for lack of rain, fade soon,
And parched, the sun's short form they own
Is that heart which sings but joy's tune.

The least pain soon is changed to grief
Because the heart's too weak to bear;
For every movement, such our fate,
Gives cause for suffering and for care.

Those who are reared in wealth and ease,
Walk stripped of good, no counsel hear;
The father's wrong care his sons to please
Bears bitter fruit, and costs them dear.
